Gary Langsford talks Art and Apartments

Can you share a little bit about yourself and your role in HR Group's Elysian project?

Sure! I am the owner and co-founder of Gow Langsford Gallery, and I have had the great privilege of collaborating with HR Group on their Elysian project. My role involves curating a collection of artworks that align with HR Group’s vision and aesthetic for the luxury apartment building, with the aim of enhancing the living experience for all the residents.

What was the initial brief from HR Group and how did it shape your approach to curating the art pieces?

HR Group's brief was clear and inspired. They wanted to elevate Elysian's common areas through art, making these spaces not just transitory, but destinations in their own right. I approached the curation with the aim of sourcing pieces that would evoke a sense of intrigue, enjoyment and contemplation, adding beauty and depth to each communal space.

HR Group has emphasised beautifying the common spaces in Elysian. How does the curated art contribute to this vision?

Each piece is carefully selected to complement the architectural design and create a dialogue with the residents and guests. The primary artist showcased within the building is Max Gimblett - his pieces add distinct character while giving the sense that they are very much 'at home' within the building. They serve to transform the common areas into dynamic spaces of cultural engagement.

Can you talk about one of Max Gimblett’s key pieces chosen for Elysian and how it fits with the Elysian’s aesthetic?

One standout piece is a large quatrefoil, a signature shape Max has used for years. Its geometric elegance perfectly complements the clean, modern lines of the building. The touch of vibrant gold leaf adds a luxurious feel, while the subtle Buddhist references bring a sense of tranquillity that beautifully aligns with the urban oasis ambiance at Elysian.

Based on your experience with the Elysian project, how would you describe HR Group's dedication to incorporating art into their development projects?

Having worked on the Elysian project with HR Group, I can honestly say their dedication to integrating art into their developments is exceptional. They believe in the transformative power of art and go the extra mile to collaborate with artists and galleries. It's inspiring to see their commitment to creating unique and beautiful spaces for their residents, setting them apart in the industry.
